Chapter 22 – A four-part plan

Secured video conference

Day 12

FROM CRC HEADQUARTERS IN Arizona, Brandt, McArdle, and Wade were looking at their big screen at Spencer, Rex, Catia, Digger, Josh, and Marissa seventy-five hundred miles away in Hong Kong. Brandt started with an update of the meeting Lawrence and Richardson had with the president and the president’s orders to get him intel he could act on.

“I'd like Rehka to join our team here on the TOMATS,” Rex said after Brandt finished.

Greg was smiling from ear-to-ear. “You can’t have her. She’s spoken for. I’ve already booked her on a flight from Mumbai to Arizona.”

“No worries. As long as she’s on the team, I'm happy.” Rex chuckled and said, “But the moment I hear that you’re a distraction to her, she’s on the first plane out of there to Hong Kong.”

Greg smiled and ignored him.

“Now,” Brandt said, “the five of you over there, ah . . . six with Digger—I’m still getting used to the idea that one of my agents is a dog—you’ve been closest to the fire.I’m sure you’ve got ideas ready about how to approach the mission. Tell us about it.”

Everyone was looking at Rex. “We have indeed. But before we get into that, we need to give you a bit more background information about our new friends, the Matzs and Sarlins. They’re more than likely going to play a consequential role in the mission.”

“Go for it,” Brandt said.

During the first briefing earlier in the day, Rex told Brandt about their new friends but didn’t elaborate on their backgrounds and heritage. Now he and Catia told them that they were Hong Kong Jews, about their massive business empires, their social status, and widespread influence not only in Hong Kong but throughout Asia and other parts of the world.

“Jews, you said . . . hmm . . .,” Brandt murmured. “Catia, you wouldn’t perhaps know if they perchance would be acquainted with our mutual friend, Yaron?”

She smiled. “They are. It’s part of the plan we have.”

“Excellent. Who is going to contact Yaron?”

“Rex and I are thinking it would save time if we setup one video conference with all of us, that includes you and Chris, and get it all done in one go.”

“Perfect. Let me know when.”

“As soon as we finish this meeting.”

Rex started, “Okay, here are the broad-brush strokes of our plan. It’s got four parts.

“One, HUMINT. We need to get collaborators in Shanghai, people who can collect information not only from the people who are afflicted and their families, but also from physicians, surgeries, hospitals, clinics, morgues, funeral homes, and such.”

“Agreed,” Brandt said.

“Two, SIGINT and ELINT. Greg, Rehka, and the rest of the CRC IT team have to get into the computer systems of those surgeries, clinics, hospitals, morgues, etcetera. If we can recruit staff who work in those places, it might be easier to get into their computer systems than trying to hack into them remotely, especially in the light of the communist regime’s megalomaniac obsession to control all internet traffic.
